How To Buy A Splitboard
Ready to take the plunge and hit the backcountry? A splitboard will get you where you've only dreamed of riding. All it takes is finding the right equipment so your adventure can begin. Here are some tips on what to look for so you can find the perfect splitboard.
What kind of splitboard should I choose?
Splitboards are just like regular snowboards. They come in many different styles depending on the type of riding you will be doing. Not all backcountry riding is the same so think about what you want the board to do and the choice should be clear. Fast steeps? Freestyle? A carving machine? The right board is out there, ready for the choosing.
Will the size be different from my regular snowboard?
This also depends on how you will be using your board. Are you saving your splitboard for strictly powder days? If so, size up about 5cm. Looking for heavily wooded back country tree runs? Might want to size down to stay nimble in tight spaces.
Can I use my regular bindings?
Yes, you can use your traditional snowboard bindings but you will have to get a transition kit to make them work with the splitboard. Note that this may change the flex and feel of the bindings, which is why we recommend going for split-specific bindings. Find more info on split bindings in our splitboard binding guide.
Can I use my regular boots?
Yes, you can use your traditional snowboard boots but keep in mind that the terrain that you will be riding in will be different than your average day on the mountain. There are backcountry boots that are worth considering that offer added support and traction. You may also want to opt for a stiffer boot if your regular boots are softer. More treacherous terrain and deeper snow conditions will require more support from your boots that soft boots can't always provide.
What else do I need?
At the very least, you'll need a splitboard, boots, bindings, skins, poles and a backpack. For more information on backcountry accessories and what gear you need for splitboarding, continue with your learning by reading our guides below.show related articles
